I spent hours looking over various bicycle racks to mount on the back of my pickup truck. Most people would probably wonder why I don't just use the box for the bikes as I have a truck. I didn't really like this idea as there is a risk of scratching my two expensive mountain bikes everytime I want to go riding and also the fact that they aren't really very well secured and could get stolen. The las reason was I do go camping, so I'd rather have the box freed up for camping equipment.So, I looked at the hanging racks first which I was going to go with those as they were cheaper than the platform racks. The only problem is you have to spend time securing them so they dont move or touch each other. I considered a platform rack, but the cheaper ones dont have adequate secure features, or you have to pay extra for the equipment. At the end of... I couldn't be more pleased with the selection! Even the tools to completely assemble it are included (though the flat wrenches are a little painful to use when cranking down on them). Easy of use, sturdy construction, adjustable rails both sideways AND fore/aft, tilt up for stowage AND tilt down for rear car access, none of the other brands out there can compare to all these features combined. Though not the most elegant looking rack, these are quality built and very functional. Even the plastic wheel well is very solid and thick, unlike the more flimsy, aluminum-strip backed Saris Thelma's. My girlfriend and I use it on my 2010 Mercury Mariner almost every weekend. We find ourselves using our bikes more than ever just because they are so easy to transport now. It takes only seconds to secure this rack to the hitch (using a hitch pin I bought separately from the hardware store) and the bikes are a breeze to load/unload. We have driven across the state with the bikes loaded on this hitch with no problems and no noise. The swing down feature is really great for unloading the car without having to unload the bikes first. I was hesitant to spend so much on a bike rack, but I'm really glad I did now. |
