Roof Mounted Convenience Without Frame Contact

The whole idea behind rooftop bike carriers is to provide the rider with ease of access to the most fully assembled bike possible once you get to your destination, but many carriers use mechanisms that require an awkward connection to your frame, or even force you to remove the front wheel. The result of this can be a struggle to hold the bike up as you fiddle with the carrier's locking mechanism at the same time. The Thule Sidearm Rooftop Upright Bike Carrier changes all that.

The Thule Sidearm Rooftop Upright Bike Carrier provides a solid, easy to use and secure bike transport system that ensures maximum bike and car protection as all its components make contact with wheel only. The sidearm carrier is designed for individual bikes with 20-29 inch wheels and tire widths up to 2.6 inches wide. To secure a bike it utilizes the combination of a rugged wheel tray which snugly holds the tires of both wheels, a wheel strap to secure the rear wheel to the tray and a combination of a locking ratchet arm with patented SecureHook technology and a wheel loop that the front tire braces against. To use, position the ratchet arm and hook assembly in a forward and fully extended position, then lift the bike up and into the wheel tray, ensuring that the front wheel precedes the wheel loop. Next, with one hand holding the bike stable, use your other hand to rotate the support arm of the SecureHook to just above the tire and ratchet the arm tightly against the wheel. You should hear a a few clicks past initial contact with the tire that lets you know that your bike is clamped down good and tight. Lastly, cinch down the back tire to the wheel tray using the wheel strap. That's all there is to it. The Thule Sidearm also can secure your bike to the carrier and carrier to the rack with two locks (sold separately).

About Thule

Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. The Thule Group is a world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great roof rack, terrible instructions, July 16, 2008

This rack is lightweight, sturdy, and quick to load and unload. It holds the bike steady on twisting mountain roads and at highway speeds substantially in excess of the posted signs. I had to do a very unscheduled unload while attempting a low clearance In-n-Out Burger drive through this past weekend. There's nothing like trying to unload a roof rack while several cars in line behind me watch and laugh, but I had the bike off the roof in under 20 seconds.

Assembling the rack is another story. It is not intuitive and the instructions reminded me of another Scandanavian company--Ikea (this is not a good thing). Between attaching the Thule fairing and the bike rack, it took me about two hours. Of course, once assembled, it attaches and removes easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for full-suspension bikes, April 21, 2011

This review is from: Thule 594XT Sidearm Roof Mount Bike Rack (Sports)
I own one sidearm attachment and two criterium attachments, all by Thule. I use the sidearm to hold my dual suspension 29er because due to the shape of the frame, the criterium does not hold as securely as I would like.

Overall I am more satisfied with the criterium, it weighs less, goes on and off the vehicle more easily, and looks better on the car. It is also easier to load the bike into the criterium. I would only suggest the sidearm to someone with a dual suspension bike or an unconventional frame shape, but if that's what you have, I would strongly recommend this product.

If you have a road bike or a hardtail mountain bike, buy the criterium. I have read some reviews of the bike falling off on people, but if you take your time to ensure the bike is loaded properly, you won't have any issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travelling with your bike made easy!, May 30, 2008
This review is from: Thule 594XT Sidearm Roof Mount Bike Rack (Sports)
This bike rack is awsome. It takes all the weight and distributes it evenly on the roof of the car, while other rear bike racks eventually will damage your car's suspension, (I speak from experience). It fits any bike, from little light weight roadies to serious full suspension downhill monsters! It does have a pretty good locking system however, like most bike/ski/snowboard racks, they are just a deterent. If somebody reallys wants your gear, they'll get it. Better to unload when parked overnight, or in sketchy locations. I have two of these babies and my fiance and I travel in style in our 89 Civic with our two bikes on the roof!! Here we come Whistler bike park!
