I can't vouch for effectiveness. Be aware that the cable is only long enough to attach two bikes, so you would need two of these for a 4-bike rack. Also, if your bike has nice wheels, etc., this cable is not long enough to secure them; it attaches the top tube of the bike frame only. Other than the convenience, I would actually recommend just getting a long cable and padlock, so that you can secure your frame and both wheels - perhaps even lock them to the safety chain loop on your trailer hitch. The lock portion on the end of the bolt that went through the car's 2 inch receiver binded somewhat and the flimsy key broke off. I had to remove the plastic from the lock to make it work. Now it works fine. I guess it doesn't fit all car receivers perfectly. Not really a design defect with the company. The keys could have been a little thicker like the extra keys that the hardware store made for me. The upper lock works fine and the wire is plenty long enough for 2 bikes.
