The Domestique comes nearly fully assembled, requiring only the included hex wrench and your own two hands to easily assemble in no time at all. Built around aerodynamic durable aluminum construction that provides a stable mounting platform, users have just to attach the wheel tray to their rack's square, oval or round load bar using the included mounting plates and other hardware. Then it is just a matter of attaching the ratcheting wheel strap to the rear of the mounted wheel tray and the skewer with racheting nut at the front integrated fork mount head. When you are ready to load your bike remove the front wheel and stow it in your vehicle. Then, place your bike's fork dropouts onto the installed skewer straight down on either side of the fork mount head. With the skewer lever open, tighten the racheting nut until the lever can be closed with some resistance and tug upwards on the fork to test its security. Lastly, pull the already installed wheel strap through the spokes of the rear wheel and slide its end into the racheting buckle as far as possible. Pull up and down a few times to secure tightly, and you are done.

About Thule

Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. The Thule Group is a world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can still be stolen, November 24, 2010

This review is from: Thule Domestique Bike Mount (Sports)
I have owned a Thule system for about 6 years with the V2 590 fork mounts. I have long been looking to upgrade because of the issues with that particular mount. I looked at the Echelon when it first came out but the stories of the mounting bracket failing have kept me away.

So I was overjoyed when I discovered they had come out with the Domestique. The skewer design seems very fail proof and the design is really great. This thing has good looks too, which helps because they are on my car all the time.

I have only owned them a few days but I have started to discover some problems. First of all the skewer lever and the entire head block are made of plastic. It looks to be a very durable plastic, but it doesn't inspire the kind of confidence that my V2s did. Chances are both of them will hold up, but the plastic head block causes some problems. It is designed so you can move the entire mount forward or backwards to accomodate a hatchback. In the forward... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Usual Thule Quality, May 28, 2012
I purchased this rack from my LBS because my wife was complaining about the wind noise created when using the standard Thule square bars and 450 feet on her Accura RDX. We can't mount the faring because of the sunroof. I needed a solution that would allow me to carry my bikes on her factory installed crossbars. A few years back Thule purchased another company and `adapted' their designs into the Thule line up. This was one of the designs ported from the acquisition. It was also one of the first Thule recalls soon after it came out. My shop recommended against this rack but we could find no other solution. Thule has improved the design in version 2 so, properly installed, there's no danger of the bike flying off the roof. When the rack arrived I was immediately struck by the amount of plastic that covers this thing. Instead of the usual clean aluminum `V' trough, the entire top is covered with lightweight plastic. Maybe the hump on the front and grooves in the channel... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great value, locking solution, April 24, 2012
I was able to mount this rack directly onto the factory roof bars on my Subaru outback which saved me a lot of money. I like the barracuda look Thule designed in, very cool. As far as security goes, I take the back strap off and throw it in my car and then but a 1/2" nut on the axle mount to take the place of the bike fork when I know Ill be away from my car for awhile. That way, the skewer is still applying pressure to the thule lock nut and can be locked to the car without a bike.
